Piano transcriptions are arrangements of classical or other pieces originally written for instruments and/or voices into a piano solo. They are a valuable tool for jazz pianists to use in creating their own original music and adding a new dimension to a familiar piece of popular music, or in giving a fresh interpretation to a well-known classic.
One of the most difficult tasks for a jazz musician is capturing on record their own personal interpretation of an already popular piece of music. This can be done through improvisation but even more so through the piano transcription which is not necessarily intended to be played with great exactitude. This allows a pianist to capture on disc the very essence of his or her own creative approach and make it available to future generations of musicians to listen to and learn from.

The great Russian pianist and composer Vyacheslav Gryaznov wrote a large number of piano transcriptions as he studied intensely orchestral music by Borodin, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff. This collection includes nine of his works, from Glinka’s Valse Fantasia to the Waltz of the Flowers from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite.
In addition to Liszt, other composers and pianists contributed significantly to the repertoire of piano transcriptions. Ferruccio Busoni, for example, was renowned for his meticulous and imaginative arrangements of works by Bach, Mozart, and others. Sergei Rachmaninoff, himself a virtuoso pianist, also left his mark on the world of piano transcriptions with his lush and expressive renditions of music by Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, and more.

The reissue of this 1996 SONY disc, which won a Grammy award, on Ivory Classics is a treasurable document of the last great piano virtuoso in the grand old Romantic tradition. Wild’s own transcriptions dominate the disc and are a pleasure to hear for their subtle impish elegance and musical charm.
