The states and union territories are further subdivided into districts. The states were reorganized in 1956 based on linguistic lines. Today, India has a total of 28 states and 8 union territories, encompassing 400 cities. The Prime Minister has initiated a plan to develop 100 smart cities across India, with Indore being recognized as the Smart City for four consecutive years.
